Why Lucènci exists

I spent over two decades working in software engineering and complex systems architecture. In the tech world, everything is built on logic, structural transparency, and verifiable data. If a system doesn't work, you debug it. You look at the logs.

When I looked at the prestige skincare industry, I realized that same logic was missing. I saw a market saturated with generic promises, temporary fixes, and black-box formulations where the actual clinical data was hidden from the consumer. As someone who relies on data, I found this incredibly frustrating — particularly for Indian skin, where most "universal" formulas were never designed with our biology in mind.

I founded Pranir Labs and created Lucènci to build the skincare brand I couldn't find — one where high-performance engineering meets cosmetic chemistry. We don't hide behind marketing fluff; we use cutting-edge AI architectures to design our formulations, and we are committed to showing you exactly how and why they work.

Built for Indian skin, not retrofitted to it

Most prestige skincare is developed for skin tones that respond very differently to actives than ours do. Indian skin has more active melanocytes — which is a feature, not a flaw — but it also means we're more prone to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, melasma, and uneven tone when ingredients are mismatched to our biology. The standard solution has been to take Western formulas and put an Indian model on the box. We start from the other direction: every Lucènci formula is engineered around how Indian skin actually behaves at the cellular level — across every undertone, every region, every Fitzpatrick type from III to VI.

The 360° formulation philosophy

I wanted to create formulas that address the root mechanics of a skin concern rather than just putting a band-aid on the surface. We approach the skin as a complete, interconnected ecosystem. Instead of a fragmented routine that only targets a single symptom, our formulations are engineered to provide 360-degree support across multiple biological pathways. We map the entire problem and design comprehensive solutions that build long-term, structural resilience.

Our flagship Acne Defence & Pigmentation Serum is a good example: instead of one hero ingredient, it pairs 8% PAD with Melazero® to address breakouts and post-acne dark marks in a single step, without the irritation that derails most Indian-skin routines.

Pranir Labs — what's under the hood

Pranir Labs is the R&D engine behind Lucènci. Our research and development is based in Bangalore, Karnataka, where we use AI-assisted formulation design to model how candidate actives behave at the skin barrier, how they interact with each other, and how they perform on Fitzpatrick IV–VI skin specifically. Manufacturing happens at our facility in Hyderabad, Telangana, under controlled cosmetic-grade conditions. Every formula goes through ingredient-level traceability — you can see what's in your bottle, why it's there, and what published research backs it.

How I work with the chemists

I am not a cosmetic chemist or a dermatologist, and I am also not a casual observer in the lab. Lucènci is a genuine co-creation between me and the formulation team. I brief the formulators on what actives I want in a product and why — not the other way around. Every active that earns a place in our lineup has been through my own research filter: peer-reviewed studies on PubMed, supplier technical data sheets, mechanistic papers in cosmetic-science journals, and conversations with researchers.

The things I read for and care about include:

• Skin biology — how the stratum corneum behaves as a barrier, how melanocytes and keratinocytes communicate, the inflammation pathways that drive post-acne hyperpigmentation in Indian skin.
• Penetration science — molecular weight in Daltons (the ~500 Da rule), partition coefficient, and which actives need a liposomal, niosomal, or lamellar delivery system to actually reach where they need to act.
• Active stability — pH windows (why niacinamide and L-ascorbic acid don't belong together at the same pH, why retinoids degrade in light), oxidation, and how to formulate around them.
• Pathway targeting — choosing actives that hit multiple pathways at once (tyrosinase inhibition + melanosome transfer blockade + anti-inflammatory) instead of a single mechanism, which is why our 360° approach exists.

This is why my formulators tell me they don't have to translate down. I bring them research, they bring formulation craft and access to lab equipment, and we iterate until the result is something I would actually put on my own face. Every concentration, every pH, every delivery system in a Lucènci product was a deliberate choice we made together — not a vendor's stock formula with our label on it.

About the founder

Kusuma Jilla is the founder of Lucènci and Pranir Labs Private Limited. With over twenty years of experience architecting complex software systems in the United States, she brings an engineering-first approach to cosmetic formulation — treating skin biology as a system to be understood, mapped, and engineered against, not marketed to. Self-taught in cosmetic chemistry through peer-reviewed research, supplier technical data sheets, and direct collaboration with formulators, she co-designs every Lucènci formula from active selection through delivery system. She splits her time between Seattle and Hyderabad, where the R&D and manufacturing teams she works with are based.
